Tailings. The mining process involves separating the copper ore from noneconomic rock. After removal of the copper, what remains is called ''tailings.''. Tailings include particles of rock, water, and residual process chemicals. We will pump the slurry-like tailings via a pipeline to a designated facility for permanent storage.
contact usThe engineering properties of tailings are important for the safety evaluation and engineering design of tailing dams. In the present study, laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the geotechnical properties of four different tailings, including two iron tailings (coarse and fine) and two copper tailings (coarse and fine).
contact us· The tailings were sampled from the Sierra Gorda copper mine located in the Atacama desert in the Antofagasta region of Chile. The specific density of the dry mineral tailings, measured by the water pycnometer test, is 2.697 g m −3.The particle size distribution (PSD) of the tailings, shown in Fig. 1, was obtained by laser diffraction (Sympatec HELOS-SUCELL, Sympatec, Germany).
contact us· Mintails, a mine tailings processor, has developed new technology to process 350,000 tons of slimes from its extensive tailings resources. It expects to recover 58 kg of gold per month, and has enough slimes to last until 2025. Goldfields has also developed new technology for a tailings retreatment plant, and processes 12,000 tons of current ...
contact us· Future Copper Deficits May Be Addressed by Mining Tailings. June 1, 2021. The use of new technology and the recent increase in copper prices has changed how miners are extracting copper from waste rock dumps. The price of the red metal surged as global stimulus measures prompted an increase in demand. Long-term projections show that the ...
contact us· Within copper mining and extraction, the resulting tailings usually account for a high proportion (up to 99%) of the mined ore . Submarine tailing disposal is considered to be a viable option as the tailings are not visible on land, may be more stable on the ocean floor and are less likely to oxidize in the submarine environment.
contact us· This is especially true of the copper, iron, and uranium industries. A total of 31,191 million tons of overburden, waste rock, and tailings was generated by the metal-ore and non-metal mineral mining industries during the period 1960-1977. Of this total, approximately 40 percent was generated by the copper mining industry alone.
contact usActually, the majority of waste tailings, such as copper tailings, iron tailings, nickel tailings, etc. do not have the inherent excellent physical and chemical properties of gold mine tailings from the Lefke-Xeros area, but are inert materials with relatively coarse particles, which are more suitable for use as an aggregate replacement [3,4,5 ...
contact usAs copper tailings appear in ground form, the grading of copper tailings reported by Gupta and Thomas (2013) and Nitish et al. (2013) has a sizeable silt fraction of 0.06–0.002 mm. Copper tailings are considered to be finer than CS, which usually has a dominant sand fraction. Table 6.5 compares the geotechnical properties of copper tailings to those of CS, which have been reported in this ...
contact us· Due to growing mining volumes, global tailings generation was estimated to total ~3.2 bn tons for copper and ~1.8 bn tons for iron in 2018. It is well known by the mining industry that the cost of tailings management and reclamation are significant for business profitability and long-term survival.
contact usAn example of the volumes of tailings and other waste that can be generated in a large copper mine. The scale of a large copper mine can make it difficult to comprehend the challenge of safely storing tailings. The example below illustrates just how much ore, waste rock, tailings and water are involved in the production of copper. Copper concentrate generally contains 20 to 30 per cent copper ...
contact us· Visualizing the Size of Mine Tailings On January 25th, 2019, a 10-meter tall wave traveling 120 km/h, washed 10 million m 3 of mining waste from the Brumadinho tailings dam over the Brazilian countryside killing somewhere between 270 and 320 people.. This was a manmade disaster, made from mining the materials we use daily. Every copper wire in your house, steel frame in an EV, …

contact us· Mine tailings are the ore waste of mines, and are typically a mud-like material. Worldwide, the storage and handling of tailings is a major environmental issue. Many tailings are toxic and must be kept perpetualy isolated from the environment. Scale of tailings production is immense, since metal extraction is usually only ounces or pounds, for ...
contact usIn 2018, the mine''s releases of toxic materials via tailings and waste rock disposal were, at more than 8 million pounds, more than four times greater than in 2010, EPA''s latest TRI report shows.
contact usCompared to the copper tailings, the iron tailings showed higher compressibility, lower permeability, lower strength, and lower cyclic resistance. With the decrease in void ratio, the coefficient of consolidation almost kept constant for the fine iron tailings, whereas for the fine copper tailings, the coefficient of consolidation gradually ...
contact us· Say a copper mine produced 1Mt of metal in 1999 at 90% recovery. The remaining 10% of copper, around 111kt, went to tailings. If the average copper price in 1999 was US$1,500/tonne then that 10% represented US$166.5 million of metal. Fast forward 20 years and at today''s price, US$5,842/tonne, if that material could be reprocessed and an extra ...
contact usThe geopolymer binder was produced with copper mine tailings (MT) and low-calcium slag (SG). The effect of water to solid (w/s) ratio, SG content (0, 25 and 50%), sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration (5, 10 and 15 M), and sodium silicate (SS) to sodium hydroxide ratio (0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5) on the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) were ...
contact usWater Reclamation and Tailings Asarco Mining Operations in Arizona Mission Mine, Tucson Text edited by Rob Vugteveen, Director, Asarco Mineral Discovery Center . Water Reclamation and Tailings. The concentrated ore, now called copper concentrate, is dewatered and dried to about 10% moisture content. It is shipped by truck to the Asarco smelter ...
contact usThis work shows the results obtained on a copper mine tailing in the Antofagasta Region, Chile. The tailing was classified as saline-sodic with high concentrations of metals, especially Cu and Fe, with pH 8.4. Our objectives were to (1) compare the physicochemical properties of the tailing with surrounding soils of the mine under study, and (2 ...
contact us· Several efforts are underway to extract gold and copper from tailings. Reprocessing mine tailings may also have environmental benefits. A recent project described in Mining is a series of experiments carried out by an international group of scientists to produce approximately 30 years of passive carbonation of mine tailings within four weeks.

contact us· The Forever Reality of Toxic Copper Mining Tailings Ponds. The moonscape surrounding the poisoned 700 acre copper mine at Butte, Montana What makes the tailings ponds so dangerous is the fact that the copper extraction process requires that the ore be ground up into a fine powder to which is added water and chemicals, and then, after the copper ...
contact usmine will be copper and molybdenum, estimations of copper tailings will be used. Approximations for the material properties will be made from previous research on copper mine tailings conducted by Bhanbhro (2014). The assumption c an be made that the mechanical properties will model material properties from other copper mines.
contact ustailings and as a result, the mining company plans to move the tailings using a slurry approach to a place where a copper smelter is located. These copper tailings have trace concentrations of Fe, As, Mn, Hg, Zn, Se, and Cd The iron oxides and sulfides cause acid generation and contaminate the surface and ground water.
